What is a urinary tract infection?
A recurrent urinary tract infection occurs when bacteria from the gut, most often e. coli, infect the bladder. These infections mainly affect women for anatomical reasons: in women, the urethra is close to the anus and sometimes bacteria from stools travel up the urinary tract and colonize the bladder.
The bladder and urinary tract are normally able to fight such an infection, but sometimes the immune system cannot cope with the task. Cystitis (urinary tract infection) can then set in. It can result in significant damage to the kidneys. In some people, cystitis may return repeatedly and become increasingly difficult to treat. Recurring urinary tract infections can cause a variety of medical complications.
Well-established cystitis typically requires antibiotic treatment. However, repeated use of antibiotics can cause the bacteria to be resistant to these drugs, which makes treatment more difficult.
